Dodworth, which is near the Pennines and was once known as a mining community, is situated. Locally, it is known as "Honest Dodworth. “The legend is said to have started with a Dodworth miner who, after having too much to drink, decided to bet that he would climb a lamppost in the village as he walked home one night. When he climbed down, he realised that he had left his gold watch on top of the lamppost. He returned the following morning sober and discovered his watch was still there. He was so overjoyed that he exclaimed, "Honest Dodworth," which is still applicable today. Barnsley Town Centre is located 10 min (2.7 miles)via Keresforth Hill Rd and B6099

Brief History of Dodworth
Dodworth a mining community in days gone by. The Dodworth Business Park now stands on the area where the pit once stood. The "muck" stack from the pit can be seen all over the community. To stop erosion and create a wildlife habitat, silver birch trees were widely planted in the early 1980s. The past twenty years have seen a flourishing of trees and wildlife. Right now, trees cover the entirety of the east, south, and west sides. The former "muck stack" is completely hidden by the rise on the north side, which is now farmland.

The intersections of High Street, Station Road, and Barnsley Road connect to Barnsley and Manchester. During medieval times, the crossroads served as a trading point for salt brought from Cheshire, proving to be one of the area's oldest trading routes.

Several old weavers' cottages line the High Street. These three-story structures produced high-quality linen cloth. It is known that riots broke out here in 1829 when 500 weavers from Barnsley invaded Dodworth to try to stop Dodworth weavers from undercutting prices. Even though a fight was fought to protect the last cottage, which is currently a newsagent's shop, it is likely that this will be lost to further development. A portion of these cottages have already been destroyed.

Midway through the 1860s, coal mining replaced weaving, and the village transformed into a typical mining community with the construction of miners' homes and the sinking of shafts. However, all of this has changed since the collapse of the coal industry.

One of the village's oldest structures is located across from the library. Above its High Street front door is evidence that it dates to 1600. Ten public houses spread out over a half-mile stretch of High Street during the village's "heyday" reflected the significant mining population at the time. Currently, there are seven pubs; the majority are old and have some historical significance. The Travellers' Inn, in particular, was a former coaching inn constructed in 1746. The village policeman was assassinated here in 1886 by James Murphy, a poacher who resided in the cottage next to the inn. In York, he was tried and hanged.

A soldier stands atop the war memorial honoring the victims of two World Wars at the crossroads, appearing prepared to defend the community. No matter what, Dodworth is and will remain a prosperous village. Travelers from far and near can visit this friendly community without difficulty thanks to its convenient access to the M1 motorway and the railway station, both of which are located within its boundaries.

St John the Baptist, which is the Church of England Parish Church for all residents of Dodworth and Gilroyd, remains the spiritual home for many from the parish who have moved to other parts of the country or around the world.

Cortonwood & Cortonwood Retail Park
The National Coal Board announced in March 1984 that the mine at Cortonwood would be closing due to the large stocks of coking coal it produced and the sharp decline in coking coal prices. The long-running UK miners' strike was started because of a series of closures, with the proposed closure of Cortonwood serving as the "final straw" (1984–1985).  The colliery was officially shut down on October 25, 1985, and all the buildings and stocks were removed by the end of 1986.

The location has now been transformed into a shopping and entertainment district. Numerous factories and office buildings, along with well-known stores like B&Q, Matalan, Next, Boots, Morrisons, McDonald's, Argos, Pizza Hut, Asda Living, Sports Direct, SCS, Halfords, Smyths Toys, Pets at Home, and TK Maxx, are present.

The park's expansion project started in May 2016. Retailers like River Island, H&M, New Look, Outfit, Poundland, JD Sports, M&S, Wilko, and Frankie and Benny's were anticipated to open a shop because of xthe expansion, which was also anticipated to bring 300 new jobs to the region. The retail park can be reached by way of the Dearne Valley Parkway (A6195 road).
