Holmfirth traces its long origins back to over a thousand years ago when the first people began to move into the area and settle. The lords of Wakefield, during the Saxon and Medieval eras, used the forested land for the sport of hunting. Holmfirth derives from 'woodland belonging to Holme'; in old English, 'firth' means 'wood' or 'woodland'.
