From an administrative point of view, the village is a civil parish in the Metropolitan Borough of Barnsley and Penistone. As such the village is in the Penistone West Ward of the Barnsley Metropolitan Borough Council.

The village lies on the edge of The Peak District National Park. It is surrounded by rolling pastures and high moors, and the river Don flows nearby. Even though it is a small village, it is lucky to have a village store, a primary school, and The Blacksmiths Arms, its local pub. This place only serves snacks, but it has real ales and the feel of a village pub. Oh! And it sells Bradfield Breweries “Belgian Blue” well worth a visit.

For a more substantial food menu, head to The Huntsman Pub in Thurlstone, less than a mile down the A628 in the direction of Sheffield; this establishment frequently wins Barnsley CAMRA's "pub of the season" award.

The wind farm on Royd Moor is the icing on the cake when it comes to the village's wonderful views and walks. These can take you to the high moors above Langsett, with their pinewoods and reservoir, or, much closer to home, to the lower moors of Royd and Low Common.

Millhouse Primary School is a small primary school in the village that welcomes students of all genders. Depending on the number of incoming students, the school has between 100 and 140 students.

Henry Richardson constructed the magnificent folly of Hartcliff Tower, a round stone tower that dominates the view to the south, in 1856. It has stairs running up the centre and is believed to have been used as a vantage point during local filming. Although the footpath does not lead directly to the tower, which is privately owned, it is an additional great destination for walking. The A616, just beyond the hill on which the tower stands, is the most haunted road in Britain. Amongst other eerie sightings, Roman Soldiers have been spotted marching on the surface of the Roman Road (albeit at a lower elevation) while heading towards Stocksbridge.

Millhouse Green is two miles west of Penistone, a thriving market town with a railway station that connects to Sheffield and Huddersfield, at the last census Penistone West had a population of approximately 13,270 people. Here, you will find an abundance of excellent pubs, a microbrewery as well as local shops, and the Penistone Paramount Cinema.
