Brief History of Wombwell
In the past, it may have been known as "Womba's Well" in the West Riding of Yorkshire, which means "well in a hollow."

Before the opening of the railways brought new industries, it was a prosperous rural community. By 1686, Wombwell was the location of a significant coaching inn on the route from Halifax to London, with 24 guest beds and stabling for 20 horses.

Mesolithic and Neolithic find locations as well as the potential 'henge' in Wombwell Wood point to prehistoric activity in the Wombwell area. Aerial photographs of the Wombwell area show cropmarks of several Iron Age and Romano-British field systems and settlements.

Evidence from place names suggests early mediaeval activity in the region. Wombwell, which was listed as "Wanbella" in the 1086 Domesday survey, may have gotten its name from the Old English word "wamb," which means a hollow and refers to the well in the hollow (Smith 1961).

Ilbert de Laci, the lord of Pontefract, received Wombwell after the Norman Conquest. While Wombwell's 13th-century manorial mill was still in use in the 18th century, St. Mary's Chapel was still standing in the mediaeval era.

The South Yorkshire Railway arrived in Wombwell in 1851, and industrial development began with the establishment of Wombwell Main Colliery in 1855. Mitchell's Main Colliery opened in 1883, and coal mining dominated the area until Wombwell Main closed in 1969.

Wombwell Main Colliery ceased operating in 1969, well over a century after the first shaft was sunk. At its height, 260,000 tonnes of coal were extracted annually and nearly 1,500 people were employed, mostly working below ground, with just a few surface workers.

Cortonwood Retail Park

The National Coal Board announced in March 1984 that the mine would be closing due to the large stocks of coking coal it produced and the sharp decline in coking coal prices.

The long-running UK miners' strike was started because of a series of closures, with the proposed closure of Cortonwood serving as the "final straw" (1984–1985).  The colliery was officially shut down on October 25, 1985, and all the buildings and stocks were removed by the end of 1986.

The location has now been transformed into a shopping and entertainment district.

Numerous factories and office buildings, along with well-known stores like B&Q, Matalan, Next, Boots, Morrisons, McDonald's, Argos, Pizza Hut, Asda Living, Sports Direct, SCS, Halfords, Smyths Toys, Pets at Home, and TK Maxx, are present.

The park's expansion project started in May 2016. Retailers like River Island, H&M, New Look, Outfit, Poundland, JD Sports, M&S, Wilko, and Frankie and Benny's were anticipated to open a shop as a result of the expansion, which was also anticipated to bring 300 new jobs to the region. The retail park can be reached by way of the Dearne Valley Parkway (A6195 road).
