"What Facebook Groups Should I Join?"

Regular Facebook users have a pretty good understanding of how to manage their newsfeeds and filter through the people, pages and groups who they want to see more of. However, whether you're looking to move into areas surrounding Penistone, Barnsley, Denby Dale and Huddersfield or if you're simply wanting to know about what's going on in your area, Butcher Residential have put together a list of Facebook Groups and Facebook Pages we think will help you make the most out of Facebook when researching the areas you're looking to move home to.

"Penistone Buy and Sell." Is a more relaxed buy and sell Facebook group in Penistone. This group has 5,500 members (as of 28/12/21) and is less moderated meaning there are more business advertisement posts but rules and regulations dictated by the administrators of the group require you to jump through less hoops to list your items for sale than the one above.

"Items for Free in Penistone and Surrounding Areas" does exactly what it says on the tin! Use the group to post anything you're wanting to give away for free and save it from ending up in a landfill OR keep an eye out for some great opportunities from generous residents of Penistone and surrounding areas!

Sports Groups

"Penistone Footpath Runners." Penistone is a superb location to live in if you're an avid runner. Quiet country lanes and a labyrinth of public pathways traversing through farmland and woodland make for superb cross-country running. There are also several locations in surrounding areas perfect for fell running. This group is full of active members who answer any questions you may have about upcoming events and routes very quickly and thoroughly. Members post almost daily inviting others out on runs and members seem to have a full range of expertise from amateur to well-seasoned!

Community Action Groups

"Penistone Community Forum" is probably "THE" Facebook Group to join. With over 6,000 members, Penistone Community Forum's members are very friendly and will go out of their way to help others requesting information and help.

"Penistone and Surrounding Areas Community Page" has half of the number of members as above but still has a loyal following but tends to also have more members sharing their business advertisements.

"No Restrictions Barnsley Items for Sale" is by far the biggest group with over 60,000 members so if you're looking to sell something on Facebook locally to someone in and around Barnsley, chances are that you'll be able to sell it on here! 

"Items for sale Barnsley and surrounding areas" is a smaller group than the one above but is more moderated.

Sports Groups

"Barnsley News and Sports" has somewhat of a focus on sports events and sports activities in and around Barnsley. However, it doesn't seem to be moderated effectively as there are lots of unrelated posts from members. Having said that, it is still useful to get an idea of upcoming sporting events and sports activities in and around Barnsley, South Yorkshire.

Community Action Groups

"The Glassworks Barnsley Market." Barnsley Town Centre has recently undergone a massive, much-needed transformation. This is a new group with already over 12,000 members. It's an active Facebook Group for Barnsley residents to share news, events... and opinions!

We Are Barnsley is your one-stop-shop for everything to do with Barnsley! It's run by the Barnsley Chronicle and posts regularly about news, sport, events, etc.

"Huddersfield Buy Swap and Sell Anything." This looks like the best Facebook group in Huddersfield for buying and selling. It has the most members and has active moderation so very little spam or scam artists get through.

"Items for sale in HD8 Only." If you're looking for a group to buy and sell to local residents in the HD8 postcode of Huddersfield only which includes Denby Dale, then this group is for you. The HD8 postcode includes the following areas in Huddersfield: Denby Dale, Shelley, Shepley, Thunderbridge, Upper and Lower Cumberworth, Skelmanthorpe, Scissett, Emley, Lepton and Kirkburton.

Sports Groups

"What's on for Kids - Huddersfield." This is a great Facebook Group if you're looking for activities for your kids and include sporting activities. 

"Huddersfield Town - Championship Banter." If you're a Huddersfield Town FC supporter, this is a great place to go for the latest news and opinions! 

"Huddersfield Giants Fans." Arguably more famous for its rugby league heritage than its footy, Huddersfield played a leading role in the creation of Rugby League back in 1895 when Rugby Union clubs in the North broke away from the RFU to create the 'Northern Union'. Head on over to this group if you'd like to get involved in the towns' rugby league events and activities. 

Community Action Groups

"Lindley, Birchencliffe, Marsh, Edgerton Facebook Community Group." One of the most prominent community Facebook groups in Huddersfield - this covers the HD3 area of Huddersfield (Lindley, Birchencliffe, Marsh and Edgerton.) It's an active group with plenty of regulars there who help out people with questions about the area.

"Shepley Community." The Shepley Community Facebook page is a great place for anyone who lives in Shepley or who is considering purchasing property in Shepley. It's an active group with plenty of useful members who are always there to help when anyone is in need. This really enforces the warm, communal nature that residents of Shelley and surrounding areas have. It's a beautiful place to live with great neighbours!
