Tour of Britain – Road closures & travel disruption
Before and during the race, parked cars will need to be moved from the route. The organisers anticipate the event will pass through the following areas at the specified times. Roads will be closed starting half an hour before the event and will reopen promptly after the race. Further details of road closures in your area can be found herePenistone - 2.25pm
Oxspring - 2.33pm
Thurgoland - 2.35pm
Hood Green - 2.42pm
The event has caused some disruption with local schools in the area. Some schools have been incredibly supportive in joining in with this great event like Penistone St John's who have offered parents the chance to collect their children early to go and watch the race!
In St John's letter to parents, the teacher, Mrs Arnold, stated:
"You may be aware that the Tour of Britain cycling race is passing through Penistone on Thursday 5th September 2024.
This means that there will be some road closures around Penistone including the High Street and parking restrictions will also be in operation around the route. The roads near school are expected to be closed between 1.00 pm and 3.30 pm but will reopen as soon as the race has passed through. With this in mind and if you would like to collect your child(ren) to watch the race we will allow collection of children from both the infants and juniors from 12.30 pm on this day.
Please collect children from their classroom doors but please do not arrive before 12.30 pm as children will still be having their lunch and the gates will not be opened before this time.
Please note children that remain in school will not be taken to watch the race by school staff for health and safety reasons. For children remaining in school, normal finishing times will apply of 3.15 pm for infants and 3.20 pm for juniors but please note that there may still be restrictions in road
closures/parking around school if the race has not passed by or been cleared. Please ensure that you allow sufficient time to get to school to collect your child(ren) at the end of the day."
